The hunting permits issued by the Fauna Office of the MGAP (Ministerio de Ganadería Agricultura y Pesca - Ministry for Cattle Agriculture and Fishing) cost between 2 UR (Unidades Reajustables - actually Pesos 838) and 4 UR (Pesos 1676). Dove hunting - With the corresponding permit, the Eared Dove (Zenaida Auriculata) can be hunted all year round without any limitations. In 2007 the Fauna Office issued 1314 permits and in 2008 1875 permits. Grouse hunting - The hunting season for the grouse goes from May 1st to July 31st. The permits allows hunting of 10 pieces a day. In 2007 1905 permits were issued and in 2008 they were 3231 permits. Duck hunting - The hunting season for ducks goes from May 1st to September 15th. The permit allows the hunting of 2 to 15 pieces depending of the species. In 2007 665 permits were issued and in 2008 1997 permits. Deer hunting - The Chital (Axis Axis) is the specie available in Uruguay. With the corresponding permit a maximum of 5 pieces are allowed to hunt (per permit). In 2007 26 permits were given and in 2008 they were 134 permits. The hunters who choose the "Club de Tiro de Pluma" (a bird hunting club) from Alberto Regusci are mostly from the US. He told that since 20 years they are coming to hunt in Uruguay. Generally they pass hunting grouses and doves for 4 to 5 days in places like Soriano, Flores and Colonia and then they go for duck hunting in the surroundings of Chuy (Rocha). "Uruguay is very interesting for them. They are allowed to hunt 10 grouses a day, meanwhile in other countries the permits don't allow this quantity. The dove is a plague in Uruguay, so they are allowed to hunt the quantity they want" he explained. To this advantages the security and charm of the "estancias" have to be added. "The Government still does not realize the importance of foreigners who come. At this time the whole board of Monsanto (a Spanish agriculture company) is hunting with me. Last week the most important directors of US hospitals were here hunting. Even the cousin of the President of the USA was here. It is people who know the country and see the potential of the people, of the land and the country." |
