Firebrigade requests evacuation of La EsmeraldaThe firebrigade requested today the evacuation of the people living in La Esmerald, a seaside resort in Rocha, as the fire is dangerously near to the village. The fire started yesterday at around 1 pm at the Km. 275 of route 9 and is fought by the firebrigade with the help of district employees from the city hall and helicopters of the Uruguayan Air Force. The smoke is seen in the city of Rocha, about 80 Kms. away from the seaside resort and also from the Barra del Chuy, about 60 Kms. away. This is not the only fire. Near San Carlos (Maldonado district), between the routes 9 and 12, another fire is being fought by the firebrigade. Also along route 1 near Libertad (San José district) another fire is being fought near the penitencery. |

Firebrigade's hard workAt this stage of the summer the firebrigade had over 100 interventions to extinguish big fires of woods and grasslands throughout the country. As during the last six months the rains in the region were very scarce, the situation is getting critical. Tha lack of rain dried out everything on the ground. The woods are therefore very sensibel to the careless fire making of the people. In the last 2 weeks througout the east coast from Montevideo the firebrigade had almost 70 interventions to extinguish fires of grassland and woods. In some cases several big surfaces have been burning for several days as the wind is continuosly changing. In Salto a big fire burned down 400 Ha's of grassland and woods. The firebrigade needed 4 days to control the fire. They even got the assistance of the Argentinian fire brigade in Concordia. The Chief of the firebrigade asked the population to take care about firemaking and of throwing cigarettes, bottles and/or fireworks (very common in this part of the year). |
